Florida Gators vs. Tennessee Volunteers
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Florida Gators face off on Tuesday in Knoxville in a SEC college basketball match up. The Gators are -8.5 point favorites over the Volunteers with an over/under point total set at 125.
The Tennessee Volunteers are one of the hottest teams in the nation as they continue their late season push to make the NCAA Tournament. Tennessee has won five games in a row, they are 8-6 in the SEC, 11-3 at home, but 0-3 against teams ranked in the top 25. As a team Tennessee is averaging 66.4 points, 10.7 assists, and they are shooting 43.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 62.8 points, 10.9 assists, and their opponents are shooting 41.4 percent. Jordan McCrae is averaging 14.9 points, Jarnell Stokes is averaging 12.8 points and 9.0 rebounds, and Trae Golden is averaging 12.2 points. Tennessee seems to make a late season run every year and this just looks to be another one of them.
The Florida Gators have been on top of the SEC standings all season and they are ranked number five in the nation. UF is 12-2 in the SEC, 7-3 on the road this season, and they have a RPI of four headed into this game. As a team Florida is averaging 73.7 points, 16 assists, and they are shooting 49.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 53.1 points, 10 assists, and their opponents are shooting 37.3 percent. Kenny Boynton is averaging 12.9 points, Mike Rosario is averaging 13 points, Erik Murphy is averaging 12.5 points, and Patric Young is averaging 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. Florida is a borderline number one seed but they are going to have to win out to have a realistic chance at it.
Tennessee is 5-0 against the spread in their last five games overall, 4-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 2-7 against the spread in their last nine home games against a team with a winning road record. Florida is 6-2 against the spread in their last eight road games, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games overall, and 1-4 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The underdog has covered the point spread in four of the last five meetings of these two.
The total in this one seems to have been set too far to the low side and I have this one going over.
Pick
Over 125
Tennessee Volunteers vs. Kentucky Wildcats
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Kentucky Wildcats face off on Saturday in Knoxville in a SEC battle. The Wildcats are -1.5 point favorites over the Volunteers with an over/under point total set at 132.
The Tennessee Volunteers have won their last two games but the wins have come against the lesser teams in the SEC. Tennessee is 5-6 in the SEC, 9-3 at home this season, and they have played the 49th ranked schedule in the nation. As a team Tennessee is averaging 63.7 points, 10.3 assists, and they are shooting 42.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.6 points, 11 assists, and their opponents are shooting 41.4 percent. Jordan McCrae is averaging 13.7 points, Jarnell Stokes is averaging 12.6 points and 8.6 rebounds, and Trae Golden is averaging 10.4 points. Tennessee usually makes a late season push and they have the opportunity to do it again this year.
The Kentucky Wildcats looked like they were on their way to making a late season run but a tough loss at Florida and the loss of their best payer, Nerlens Noel, what the Cats have to bring to the table remains to be seen. Kentucky is 8-3 in the SEC, 4-4 on the road this season, and they are just 1-4 against teams with a RPI better than 50. As a team Kentucky is averaging 75 points, 14.5 assists, and they are shooting 48.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 62.8 points, 10.8 assists, and their opponents are shooting 38.2 percent. Archie Goodwin is averaging 13.9 points, Alex Poythress is averaging 12 points and 6.3 rebounds, and Kyle WIltjer is averaging 11.5 points. Kentucky still as a boatload of talent but it’s tough to replace a defensive talent like Noel.
Tennessee is 4-1 against the spread following a game which they covered the spread, 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games, and 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 Saturday games. Kentucky is 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games overall, 2-6-1 against the spread following a loss, and 3-11 against the spread against the SEC. the home team has covered the spread in seven of the last nine meetings of these two.
This is a tough one as the books appear to be baiting the public to take Kentucky but I am going to go the other way and take the Vols at home here.
Pick
Tennessee Volunteers +1.5 Kentucky Wildcats
Tennessee Volunteers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Tennessee Volunteers look for their first SEC conference college basketball win of the year as they face off on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide are -4 point favorites over the Vols with an over/under point total set 120.
The Alabama Crimson Tide have now lost three of their last four games including a 16 point loss to Missouri in their SEC opener. Alabama kept it close against Mizzou most of the way but in the end their road record dropped to 1-3 overall this season. As a team Alabama is averaging 65.7 points, 11.8 assists, and they are shooting 44.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 60.6 points, 11 assists, and their opponents are shooting 40.2 percent. Trevor Releford is averaging 16.4 points, Trevor Lacey is averaging 12.3 points, and Rodney Cooper is averaging 12.2 points. Alabama looks to be in for a much longer year than they had anticipated.
The Tennessee Volunteers have now lost their last two games and what looked like a promising team will look to avoid sliding out of contention for a post season berth. The Vols are 0-2 on the road this season and they have played the 57th ranked schedule overall but they simply looked lost getting routed at home by Ole Miss in the SEC opener. As a team Tennessee is averaging 65.2 points, 10.5 assists, and they are shooting 42 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.3 points, 10.2 assists, and their opponents are shooting 40.2 percent. Jordan McCrae is averaging 12.7 points, Jarnell Stokes is averaging 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds, and Trae Golden is averaging 11.4 points and 4.2 assists. Tennessee needs a big win get their momentum moving in the right direction.
Alabama is 6-13 against the spread following a game they didn’t cover the spread, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven home games, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall. Tennessee is 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games, 8-3 against the spread against the SEC, and 1-4 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The road team has covered the spread in five of the last seven meetings of these two.
We are getting nice value on Tennessee here as it isn’t just too many points, they could win outright.
Pick
Tennessee Volunteers +4 Alabama Crimson Tide
Tennessee Volunteers vs. Missouri Tigers
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Missouri Tigers face off on Saturday in Knoxville in SEC college football action. The Volunteers are -2.5 point favorites over the Tigers.
The Tennessee Volunteers look to be headed in the right direction but they are far from over the hump to becoming a top tier program once again and they need two more wins this year to become bowl eligible. Tyler Bray has proved to be capable at QB completing 59.9 percent of his passes with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Rajeon Neal is averaging 4.5 yards per carry with five touchdowns while catching 16 passes for another three touchdowns and Marlin Lane saw the bulk of the carries last week and he is averaging 5.0 yards per carry with two touchdowns. Justin Hunter is the Vols leading receiver with 56 catches and seven touchdowns, Codarrelle Patterson has 36 catches and four touchdowns, and Zach Rogers has 25 catches and five touchdowns. Defensively Tennessee allows 35.4 points per game, 186.4 rushing yards, and 296.8 passing yards with 10 interceptions and 12 sacks. A.J. Johnson has 101 tackles, Byron Moore has 76 tackles, and Herman Lathers has 54 tackles. This is a must win for Tennessee if they hope to play in a bowl game.
The Missouri Tigers are having a rough first year in the SEC but as we saw last week at Florida Mizzou has far from quit. QB James Franklin is back on the field and he has completed 57.5 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and six interceptions. Kendial Lawrence is averaging 4.9 yards per carry with eight touchdowns while catching 16 passes out of the backfield and Marcus Murphy is averaging 6.1 yards per carry with a touchdown. Marcus Lucas leads the Missouri receivers with 34 catches and two touchdowns, T.J. Moe has 30 catches and a touchdown, and Gahn McGaffie has 26 catches. Defensively Missouri is allowing 22.6 points per game, 142 rushing yards, and 185.6 passing yards with five interceptions and 19 sacks. Will Ebner and Sheldon Richardson each have 63 tackles and Andrew Wilson has 55 tackles. Missouri is in the same situation as Tennessee needing to win two of their last three to go to a bowl game.
Tennessee is 3-9-1 against the spread in their last 13 SEC games, 0-5 against the spread int heir last five home games, and 5-1 against the spread in their last six home games against a team with a losing road record. Missouri is 6-1 against the spread following their last seven losses, 1-6 against the spread following a cover, and 5-2 against the spread after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
This game looks to be tight and the odds makers look to have it about right but I will take the points in a pick that is nothing more than a slight lean at best.
Pick
Missouri Tigers +2.5 Tennessee Volunteers
South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Tennessee Volunteers
The Tennessee Volunteers and the South Carolina Gamecocks face off in Saturday in Columbia in a battle of SEC teams looking to end losing streaks. The Gamecocks are -14 point favorites over the Volunteers.
The South Carolina Gamecocks were ranked in the top 10 and undefeated just two weeks back but now after back to back road losses to LSU and Florida they are looking to regain their footing. QB Connor Shaw didn’t make it out on the field for the second half at Florida last week as he was already battered and struggling fumbling on the game’s first play and not having an arm that could test the Florida secondary but backup Dylan Thompson spent most of his time on running for his life something neither QB can afford to do this week. Marcus Lattimore didn’t look 100 percent but for the season he is averaging 4.5 yards per carry with 10 touchdowns and he has 24 catches. Ace Sanders has 19 catches with four touchdowns, Bruce Ellington has 17 catches and two touchdowns, and Damiere Byrd has just 12 catches and two touchdowns. As much as the offense for South Carolina has struggled the defense has been impressive allowing 16.2 points per game, 106.2 rushing yards, and 175.9 passing yards with nine interceptions and 29 sacks. Shaq Wilson has 50 tackles, one sack, and two interceptions, Jadeveon Clowney has 7.5 sacks, and Chazz Sutton has four sacks. South Carolina’s two losses were to two of the best teams in the nation and on the road but this is a must win to get the positive momentum going once again.
The Tennessee Volunteers have lost three games in a row and even though they were all to strong teams the Vols’ season is getting away from them. QB Tyler Bray has completed 59 percent of his passes with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Rajeon Neal missed last week’s game against Alabama but he is leading Tennessee with 4.5 yards per carry with five touchdowns, Marlon Lane is averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and Devrin Young is averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Justin Hunter has 39 catches and four touchdowns, Cardarelle Patterson has 24 catches and three touchdowns, and Zach Rodgers has 17 catches. Defensively Tennessee is allowing 33.3 points per game, 186.6 rushing yards, and 258.9 passing yards nine interceptions and 10 sacks. A.J. Johnson has 51 tackles, Byron Moore has 53 tackles and four interceptions, and Darrington Sentimore has four sacks. Tennessee seems to play hard for one half but they haven’t played well for a full four quarters.
South Carolina is 6-0 against the spread in their last six home games, 5-0 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five SEC games. Tennessee is 2-6 against the spread following a loss, 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall, and 1-8-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The favorite has covered in five of the last six meetings of these two.
Two touchdowns seem to be a lot for this game but if Lattimore and Shaw are good to go here look for the Gamecocks to get the cover late
Pick
South Carolina Gamecocks -14 Tennessee Volunteers
Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Volunteers
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs face off on Saturday for a SEC college football battle in Starksville. The Bulldogs are -2.5 point favorites over the Volunteers.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are unbeaten and ranked and with a win in this one will already be bowl eligible with half of the season left to play. QB Tyler Russell has completed 56.6 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and an interception. LaDarius Perkins is averaging 6.1 yards per carry with six touchdowns and Josh Robinson is averaging 4.9 yards per carry to anchor the MSU running game. Chad Bumphis has 21 catches and six touchdowns, Chris Smith has 16 catches, and Arceto Clark has 10 catches. Defensively Mississippi State is allowing 13.4 points per game, 126 rushing yards per game, and 199.6 passing yards per game with nine interceptions and eight sacks. Bernadrick McKinney has 36 tackles, Preston Smith has three sacks, and Darius Slay has four interceptions. After a disappointing year last season Mississippi State has exceeded all expectations this year.
The Tennessee Volunteers are still looking for their first SEC win of the year after losing at home to Florida and losing a barn burner at Georgia in their last game before last week’s off week. QB Tyler Bray has completed 61.1 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. Rajion Neal has gotten the bulk of the carries in the backfield and he is averaging 4.5 yards per carry with four touchdowns and Marlon Lane is averaging 5.0 yards per carry. Justin Hunter is the Vols primary receiver with 33 catches and four touchdowns and Cordarrelle Patterson has 21 catches and two touchdowns. Defensively Tennessee has had issues as they allow 29.6 points per game, 186.2 rushing yards per game, and 239.6 passing yards per game with nine interceptions and six sacks. A.J. Johnson has 42 tackles to lead Tennessee, Byron Moore has 36 tackles and four interceptions, and Eric Gordon has 22 tackles and two interceptions. Tennessee appears to be on the upswing but they haven’t been able to get it done against the better teams.
Mississippi State is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven SEC games, 6-2 against the spread in their last eight home games, and 4-0 against the spread in their last four home games against a team with a winning record. Tennessee is 4-9 against the spread in their last 13 games overall, 1-6-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 2-7-1 against the spread in their last 10 SEC games. Tennessee has covered in the last four meetings of these two.
I like Tennessee to get the win in the spot and I will take the points.
Pick
Tennessee Volunteers +2.5 Mississippi St. Bulldogs
LSU Tigers vs. Tennessee Volunteers
The LSU Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers try to catch the eye of the post season selection committees as they meet on Wednesday in Baton Rouge. The Tigers are -1 point favorites over the Volunteers with an over/under point total set at 124.
The LSU Tigers looked like they had an outside chance of making the field of 68 for this year’s NCAA Tournament but Trent Johnson’s team was at the wrong end of a beat down against Ole Miss which could end up being their final undoing. LSU is 7-7 in the SEC, 11-3 at home this season, and they are in sixth place in the conference standings. Justin Hamilton is averaging 13.2 points and 7.2 rebounds, Andre Stringer is averaging 10.4 points, and Anthony Hickey is averaging 9.1 points. As a team the Tigers are averaging 65.7 points and they are shooting 40.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 63.1 points and their opponents are shooting 41.2 percent. LSU has a 63 RPI and the 53rd ranked schedule and that might not be enough to get it done with their record.
The Tennessee Volunteers have won six of their last seven games and Cuonzo Martin’s team is looking to make it interesting on selection Sunday. Tennessee is 8-6 in the SEC, 3-8 on the road this season, and they are tied for fourth place in the conference standings. Trae Golden is averaging 13.3 points and 4.6 rebounds, Jeronne Maymon is averaging 12.6 points and 8.0 rebounds, and Jordan McCrae is averaging 9.2 points. As a team the Vols are averaging 68.8 points and they are shooting 44.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 65.1 points and their opponents are shooting 41.4 percent. Tennessee has been on an outright tear but it may have started just a little too late.
LSU is 4-0 against the spread in their last four home games, 4-1 against the spread against the SEC, and 8-3 against the spread following a loss. Tennessee is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games overall, 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 road games, and 4-1 against the spread following a win. The underdog has covered in six of the last seven meetings of these two.
Tennessee has been rolling of late and this one should be a nail biter where getting the point may work.
Pick
Tennesee Volunteers +1 LSU Tigers
Kentucky Wildcats vs. Tennessee Volunteers
The Kentucky Wildcats and the Tennessee Volunteers meet for the second time in January as they face off in Lexington on Tuesday for an SEC college hoops contest. The Wildcats are -16.5 point favorites over the Volunteers with an over/under point total set at 132.
The Kentucky Wildcats are the number one ranked team in the country and the deeper they get into the season the better John Calipari’s team is looking. UK is 7-0 in the SEC, 13-0 at home this season, and a game ahead of Florida and Vandy in the conference standings. Doron Lamb is averaging 13.5 points, Anthony Davis is averaging 13.3 points and 10.3 rebounds, Michael Kidd Gilchrist is averaging 12.7 points and 7.6 rebounds, and Terrance Jones is averaging 12.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. As a team Kentucky is averaging 78.2 points, 40.1 offensive rebounds, and they are shooting 48.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 58.5 points and their opponents shoot 36.4 percent. While championships are won in March the Cats look at the very least like a team who can make a run.
The Tennessee Volunteers are looking to get back to .500 overall and Cuonzo Martin’s team can get back there with a win in this one. Tennessee is 2-4 in SEC play, 1-6 on the road this season, and 2-3 against teams ranked in the top 25. Trae Golden is averaging 13.1 points and 4.8 assists, Jeronne Maymon is averaging 11.7 points and 8.2 rebounds, Cameron Tatum and Jordan McCrae are averaging 8.7 points each. As a team Tennessee is averaging 69.6 points and they are shooting 44.5 percent and their opponents are averaging 66 points and they shoot 42 percent. Tennessee has talent on their roster but it just hasn’t come together often this season.
Kentucky is 3-14-1 against the spread in their last 18 games overall, 1-11-1 against the spread in their last 13 home games, and 0-5 against the spread against a team with a losing record. Tennessee 1-5 against the spread in their last six road games, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games overall, and 3-13-1 against the spread following a win. The favorite has covered in five of the last seven meetings of these two.
The first game was a three point difference for the visiting Cats but Kentucky has simply just been getting better every game and they have hit high gear
Pick
Kentucky -16.5 Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee Volunteers vs. Vanderbilt Commodores
The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Tennessee Volunteers meet on Tuesday in Nashville in a battle of Tennessee based teams in the SEC. The Commodores are -9 point favorites over the Volunteers with an over/under point total set at 129.
The Vanderbilt Commodores were cruising through their SEC schedule until Saturday when Kevin Stallings team ran into an inspired Mississippi State team. Vandy is 4-1 in the SEC, 8-4 at home this season, and all alone in second place in the conference. John Jenkins is averaging 19.8 points per game, Jeffery Taylor is averaging 17.1 and 5.6 rebounds, Lance Goulbourne is averaging 10.2 points and 7.4 rebounds, and Brad Tinsley is averaging 9.8 points and 4.4 assists. As a team Vanderbilt is averaging 74.7 points and they are shooting 46.8 percent while defensively they are allowing 65.7 points and their opposition is shooting 42 percent. Vanderbilt can score in bunches but where they have flatered is when they can’t hold their opponent to a reasonable number.
The Tennessee Volunteers are looking to get to .500 on the season as Cuonzo Martin’s team seems to get up for the big games and seems to look flat against the lesser teams. Tennessee is 1-3 in the SEC, 1-5 on the road this season, and 2-7 against teams with a RPI better than 100. Trae Golden is averaging 13.6 points and 5.2 assists, Jeronne Maymon is averaging 11.4 points and 7.7 rebounds, and Cameron Tatum is averaging 9.5 points. AS a team Tennessee is averaging 71.1 points and they are shooting 45.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 6.9 points and their opponents are shooting 42.6 percent. Tennessee’s season isn’t a total loss yet but they can’t afford too many more stumbles or it will be.
Vanderbilt is 7-2-1 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games, and 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games against a team with a losing record. Tennessee is 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games ,and 4-1 against the spread in their last five games overall. The home team has covered in seven of the last 10 meetings of these two.
Tennessee hasn’t been strong on the road and Vandy has been solid overall despite their loss last time out but this is simply too many points to pass on in this spot.
Pick
Tennessee Volunteers +9 Vanderbilt Commodores
Tennessee Volunteers vs. Kentucky Wildcats
The Tennessee Volunteers and the Kentucky Wildcats battle it out on the hardwood in a SEC matchup on Saturday. The Wildcats are -10 point favorites over the Volunteers with an over/under point total set at 136.
The Tennessee Volunteers are at .500 on the year but Cuonzo Martin’s team is playing hard and they have been competitive. Kentucky fell four points short as Mississippi State on Thursday but they were in it until the very end and never quit as their players seem to be playing up to their ability. Trae Golden is averaging 14.9 points and 5.3 assists, Jerome Maymon is averaging 11.3 points and 7.6 rebounds, Jordan McCrae is averaging 10.4 points, and Cameron Tatum is averaging 8.9 points. As a team The Vols are averaging 73.4 points and they are shooting 46.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 68.2 points and their opponents shoot 43.4 percent. Tennessee doesn’t look like they are done yet but it is going to take a big run for them to be part of March Madness.
The Kentucky Wildcats have established themselves as one of the teams to beat this season and have won their last eight games in a row since being upset at Indiana. John Calipari has assembled a team of All-Americans in Lexington and UK appears to be upholding their long standing tradition of being one of the top teams in the SEC and the nation. Doron Lamb is averaging 14.6 points, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is averaging 13.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, Anthony Davis is averaging 12.8 points and 10.3 rebounds, and Marquis Teague is averaging 10.9 points and 4.4 assists. As a team Kentucky is averaging 80.1 points, 40.1 offensive rebounds, and they are shooting 48.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 58.7 points and their opposition shoots 35.3 percent. Kentucky is clearly one of the teams to beat and a favorite to make a return trip to the Final Four.
Tennessee is 5-2-1 against the spread in their last eight home games, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven SEC games, and 5-1-1 against the spread following a cover. Kentucky is 3-13-1 against the spread in their last 17 games overall, 3-12-1 against the spread following a win, and 1-9-1 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover. The favorite has covered in five of the last six meetings of these two.
The total in this one is set at 136 and that shouldn’t been much of a problem for these two and my pick is the Over.
Pick
