The San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet for the rubber match of their three game series on Thursday at Petco Park. The Diamondbacks are -140 favorites over the Padres with an over/under run total set at 6.5.
The San Diego Padres appeared to be headed for another loss on Wednesday but they never quit as they rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning for two runs which was good enough to get to the lead and eventually to get the win. Chris Denorfia had one hit but it was a two run home run, and Cameron Maybin, Chase Headley, Jesus Guzman, and Orlando Hudson all had hits as the Padres had five hits and two runs total. On the mound Cory Luebke allowed four hits and a run while striking out five over 5.1 innings of work to not factor in the decision as Ernesto Frieri was the eventual winner and Huston Street got his first save as a member of the Padres. For Thursday’s series finale San Diego starts Anthony Bass who has only worked in relief this season. In two appearances Bass has allowed two hits and run over four innings of work with the run resulting in a loss to the Dodgers.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were the last of the unbeaten teams in the Majors this season but the key word is were as they fell to the padres on Wednesday. Willie Bloomquist had two hits and scored a run, Jason Kubel had two hits, and Chris Young had a hit as the Diamondbacks scored just one run on five hits. Joe Saunders allowed just four hits over seven innings as he struck out four and didn’t allow a run but it was David Hernandez who allowed a hit and two runs to get tagged with the blown save and the loss. For Thursday’s game Arizona starts Ian Kennedy who was solid getting a win in his first start. In his first outing Kennedy allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out three over 6.2 innings of work.
San Diego is 2-5 in game seven of a series, 2-4 in their last six games overall, and 16-38 against the N.L. West. Arizona is 12-4 in their last 16 games as a favorite, 2-7 in their last nine road games, and 10-4 in Kennedy’s last 14 road starts. Arizona is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings of these two.
The total is set at 6.5 and I have this one coming in under that number.
