Nigeria vs. Germany
This Group A match sees powerhouse Germany come off a 2-1 victory over Canada face off against Nigeria at Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt, Germany who were defeated 1-0 in their opening match at the hands of France.
Germany were fairly convincing in large portions of their opening match but failed to “kill the game” when they had the chance and gave Canada a life line in the last ten minutes of the match, conceding a fantastic free kick goal to Christine Sinclair and were actually up against in the final moments. German superstar and captain Birgit Prinz didn’t have her best match but teammates Kerstin Garefrekes and Célia Okoyino da Mbabi picked up the slack with not only their goals but also with their general positive play. However the strength of this team might be what they bring off the bench, especially in Forward Alexandra Popp. Playing the final thirty minutes of the match she showed how dangerous she could be with both the size and skill advantage she showed over the Canadian defense. It wouldn’t be surprising if Coach Silvia Neid started her along side the aforementioned Garefrekes to match the physicality of the Nigerians, but the main aspect the Germans need to show as they have many times in the past is the killer instinct to finish off an opponent.
As for Nigeria, their narrow 1-0 defeat to France more spoke to the their ineffectiveness when attacking then anything else. The only player that showed any threat was Desire Oparanozie, with star player Perpetua Nkwocha a complete non-factor. Their one advantage they have over most teams in this tournament is their physicality and endurance, but France proved that with a strong midfield combined with the extremely hot conditions the Africans could be worn down. Coach Ngozi Uche will need her team to finish the few chances they get and close up any gaps that are between the defensive midfield and the backline, the Germans are an experienced team that will use their size and soccer intelligence to exploit any spaces.
I expect the Germans to go from strength to strength in this match and think they learned a few things about themselves from their opening match. I’m going with the over in this one even with it being set at 3.5 instead of the customary 2.5, as I think the Germans are just that much better.

Canada vs. France
The FIFA Women’s World Cup continues with a crucial Group A showdown, Canada tries to rebound from their 2-1 defeat to Germany when they take on France in Bochum, Germany who themselves are one step away from qualifying for the Quarterfinals.
Canada was beaten by a very strong German side but weren’t completely dominated as most were expecting, they showed skill on the ball and actually had the advantage in possession but were exposed defensively. However the one aspect that was taken away from this game is the toughness and class of captain Christine Sinclair, taking an elbow to the face and subsequently breaking her nose she refused medical attention to get back on the pitch and scored a fantastic goal from a free kick. Now Canada turn their attention to France in a match they must get a result from, scoring the goal against Germany made it a respectable goal differential but getting a win would relieve the massive pressure the team is under. Coach Carolina Morace will need her defense to have much better communication, especially the wingbacks Emily Zurrer and Marie-Eve Nault who were caught up field too often and failed when executing the offside trap. All signs point to Christine Sinclair playing in Canada’s final two matches, however she will most likely be donning a protective mask.
As for France, they came away with a narrow 1-0 victory against Nigeria in a match that they arguably should have dominated, especially in the latter stages. The stand out players for Les Bleues were the midfield combination of Louisa Necib and Camille Abily, both contributed to the goal and their speed, skill on the ball and overall play was very impressive. France are now in a position to seal qualification for the Quarterfinals if they defeat Canada and Germany don’t drop three points against Nigeria, Coach Bruno Bini will like how his team stacks up in this match with the strength in midfield and speed up front. He will be looking for Necib, Abily and goal scorer Marie-Laure Delie to continue linking up and get a spark off the bench from the likes of Eugénie Le Sommer.
This is a tough match to call, Canada showed that they won’t back down even when they losing 2-0 and actually made Germany a little nervous in the last ten minutes of the match while France are in a good position with their midfield displaying how creative they can be. I like the over in this match, both teams will get their chances and with a game under their belts the finishing ability will be much better.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Baltimore Orioles
The St. Louis Cardinals go for the road sweep as they play the Baltimore Orioles in game three of their series at Camden Yards. The Orioles are -120 favorites over the Cardinals with an over/under run total set at 9.5
The Baltimore Orioles came in to this series in last place in the American League East and they haven’t done anything to improve their position. On Wednesday Night J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis each had two hits and Vladimir Guerrero had a hit as part of the seven hits that yield just one run for the Orioles. Starter Chris Jakubauskas allowed seven hits and five earned runs while striking out two over five innings to take his first loss though the bullpen allowed just one hit over four innings. For Thursday’s game Baltimore starts Brian Matusz who has lost his last three starts. For the season Matusz has allowed 31 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 16 over 22.1 innings of work.
The St. Louis Cardinals looked to be struggling and while they haven’t caught the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, they are just a game back in the standings. On Wednesday Colby Rasmus homered and drove in two runs, Skip Schumaker had two hits and scored twice, and Nick Punto had two hits and scored a run as eight Cardinals hits led to five runs. Chris Carpenter allowed seven hits and a run while striking out five over a complete nine innings earning him his third win of a sub par season for him. On Thursday St. Louis starts Jaime Garcia who fills in for Jake Westbrook who is a late scratch. Garcia has lost three of their last four decisions and for the season he has allowed 96 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 88 over 100 innings of work.
Baltimore is 6-2 in their last eight home games against a left handed starter, 9-4 in their last 13 game three of a series, and 7-2 in Matusz’s last nine home starts. St. Louis is 10-4 in their last 14 interleague road games, 5-12 in their last 17 games overall, and 2-5 in Garcia’s last seven road starts.
I expect a lot of runs in today’s game. Therefore, I am taking the over 9.5 here.

Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs finish off their four game series at Wrigley Field on Thursday. The Giants are -130 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 8.
The Chicago Cubs will have a chance to even the series on Thursday afternoon as they managed to rally in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run and for their first win in this series. Blake DeWitt had two hits and drove in a run, Aramis Ramirez had a hit and drove in the game winner, and Carlos Pena scored a run as the Cubs had eight hits that they turned into two runs which were enough to get the win in a pitcher’s duel. Ryan Dempster allowed three hits and a run while striking out six over eight innings of work to get a no decision as Carlos Marmol allowed the tying run in the ninth inning to get the blown save but he also earned his second win of the year. For Thursday’s series finale Chicago starts Carlos Zambrano who allowed just two runs in his last start but didn’t get a decision. For the season Zambrano has allowed 109 hits and 54 earned runs while striking out 74 in 111 innings of work.
The San Francisco Giants’ bats were silent on Wednesday and though they tied the game in the ninth inning they squandered a big chance by not getting any more runs after loading the bases with one out. Emmanuel Burris had a hit and drove in the lone Giants’ run, Pat Burrell, Aubrey Huff, Nick Schierholtz, and Pablo Sandoval all had hits as part of a five hit one run night. Tim Lincecum was dazzling allowing five hits and run while striking out nine over seven innings including stranding a runner at third after getting their with no outs but he didn’t figure in the decision as it was Sergio Romo who gave up the winning hit and run. For Thursday’s game San Francisco goes with Matt Cain who has won his last four decisions. For the season Cain has allowed 90 hits and 38 earned runs while striking out 89 over 106.1 innings of work.
Chicago is 2-4 in their last six home games, 1-4 in their last five games against a team with a winning record, and 1-5 in Zambrano’s last six starts. San Francisco is 7-1 in their last eight games overall, 4-1 in their last five games against a team with a losing record, and 9-4 in Cain’s last 13 road starts. Chicago is 7-3 in Zambrano’s last 10 starts against San Francisco.
Zambrano has struggled a bit and Cain has been one tough customer again this year and I have to give the edge to the defending World Series Champions. I’m taking the Giants minus the 130.

San Francisco -130 Chicago Cubs
DON’T BLAME THE COACH
Everybody’s calling for Bob Bradley’s head after the USA gave up four straight goals to Mexico. Not me. I think he came to the gunfight with a squirt gun full of red sugar water.Brazil vs. Australia
This match from Group D sees South American giants Brazil take on Asian representatives Australia at Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach, Germany. Brazil comes into the tournament as a massive favorite to finally shed their “bridesmaid” tag and win the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The South Americans have been dominant within their region winning the South American Women’s Championship on five of six occasions in 1991, 1995, 1998, 2003, and 2010 with their only hiccup coming in 2006 when they finished runners up. Coach Kleiton Lima has been in charge of the side since January 2009 and will be looking to get this team over the hump. The key players for the Samba Queens are the “Big 3” of Marta, Cristiane and Formiga, Marta is widely considered the best female player in the world and is well decorated winning five FIFA Women’s Player of the Year Awards in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 as well as winning four Championships in Sweden with club side Umeå IK in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 amongst other honors. Cristiane is her “partner in crime” in the Brazilian attack and can be a major threat if not properly defended, however contrary to popular belief the most important player may just be Formiga. She is the midfield enforcer and adds toughness where the team needs it most; she will be responsible for marking the opposition’s best player. All three of these players ply their trade in the WPS, something that makes them even more familiar with each other.
As for Australia, they qualified for this tournament as champions of the 2010 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and are one of the main reasons why powerhouse China isn’t in this year’s competition. This team finally broke their streak of Group Stage exits in 2007 when they reached the Quarterfinals, they will be looking to build on that this time around and possibly go one step further. Since Australia moved from the Oceania region to the Asian region it has helped both the male and female sides, giving them stronger competition and forcing them to improve their quality of players. Coach Tom Sermanni has a wealth of experience to draw on and has been in charge of Australia since 2004, the Scotsman is well respected by the both the players and Australian Soccer Association. Key players for the Aussies are Lisa De Vanna, Kyah Simon and Melissa Barbieri, De Vanna and Simon will be leading the line up front, adding pace and finishing ability while captain and goalkeeper Barbieri will be in charge of organization.
This might just be a closer match them many are expecting, I still like the Brazilians to open their account with a victory but the Aussies won’t roll over by any means. I think there will be goals in this match so I will go for the over.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
The Toronto Blue Jays and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet for game two of their series in Toronto. The Blue Jays are -155 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under run total set at 8.
The Toronto Blue Jays fought back all night long but in the end they came up a run short and took the loss in Tuesday’s opener. Edwin Encarnacion had two home runs, both solo shots, Jose Bautista had a home run and three RBI’s, and Corey Patterson homered while Yunel Escobar and Eric Thames botrh had two hits as the Blue Jays had nine hits and six runs on the night. Jo-Jo Reyes had a tough noight on the hill as he allowed nine hits and six earned runs while striking out five lasting just three and two thirds innings as he took his seventh loss of the season. For game two of the series Toronto starts Brandon Morrow who has been tagged often this year but has shutouts in two of his last four starts. For the season Morrow has allowed 66 hits and 37 earned runs while striking out 81 over 68 innings of work.
The Pittsburgh Pirates got off to an early lead and never trailed getting the win on Tuesday night. Alex Presley homered, had two hits and drove in three runs and Andrew McCutchen hit a solo homer while Matt Diaz had three hits and Ronny Cedeno had two in a 12 hit seven run Pirates offensive effort. Starter Kevin Correia allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out three over six innings of work to get his 10th win of the season while Joel Hanrahan was dominating in the ninth inning earning his 23rd save of the year. For Wednesday’s rematch Pittsburgh starts Paul Maholm who has won two of his last three starts. For the season Maholm has allowed 83 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 63 over 101 innings of work.
Toronto is 3-8 in their last 11 interleague home games, 5-2 in their last seven games against a left handed starter, and 1-5 in Morrow’s last six home starts. Pittsburgh is 8-1 in their last nine game two of a series, 5-1 in their last six games overall, and 7-19 in Maholm’s last 26 road starts.
Pittsburgh seems to be a year ahead of schedule and while they aren’t all the way where they want to be, Toronto seems be treading water these days. I’ll take the Pirates plus the 135.
Pick
Pittsburgh Pirates +135 Toronto Blue Jays
New York Yankees vs. Milwaukee Brewers
The New York Yankees look for their fourth win in a row as they host the Milwaukee Brewers in game two of their series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are -135 favorites over the Brewers with an over/under run total set at 9.
The New York Yankees jumped all over the Milwaukee Brewers early on Tuesday Night and they never took their foot off of the gas in a 10 run route of their visitors from the NL Central. Nick Swisher homered had two hits, and drove in four runs, Mark Teixeira homered and had four RBI’s, and Alex Rodriguez had two hits and scored twice as part of a 10 hit 12 run offensive night for the Yankees. Starter Freddy Garcia gave another strong effort as he allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking just one over six innings of work to earn his seventh win of the year. For Wednesday’s rematch New York starts A.J. Burnett who hasn’t been as wild as last season but it hasn’t meant a lot of wins as he has lost three of his last four games. For the year Burnett has allowed 83 hits and 46 earned runs while striking out 81 over 99.2 innings of work.
The Milwaukee Brewers Road problems continued on Tuesday as they never had a chance against the Yankees. Matt Gamel had two hits and an RBI in the DH role, Prince Fielder had a hit and scored a run, and Jonathan Lucroy had two hits as the Brewers scored two runs on 11 hits. Zack Greinke as shelled early and often as he allowed five hits and seven earned runs as he lasted just two innings taking his third loss of the year. For Tuesday’s game Milwaukee goes with Shaun Marcum who has four no decisions and a win in his last five starts. For the season Marcum has allowed 75 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 86 in 94.2 innings of work.
New York is 7-1 in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, 13-4 in their last 17 games overall, and 1-4 in Burnett’s last five home starts. Milwaukee is 13-3 in their last 16 game two of a series, 15-6 in their last 21 games against a team with a winning record, and 1-5 in Marcum’s last six starts.
This is a tough one as both of these pitchers can bring it and when they are on they are really tough. I think this one is a low scoring game as the starters get it to the middle innings and the managers play the chess match the rest of the way. I’ll take the under 9 runs here.

AT&T National
The PGA Tour visits Aronimink Golf Club this week outside of Philadelphia for the AT&T National. This will be the final time the course hosts the event as it was on loan to them while Congressional prepared to host the U.S. Open. Congressional will return as the host course in 2012. Looking at the final standings from 2010, the course was certainly not easy test for players as only the top 16 finished under par for the week. Of those finishing in the top 10, eight of them averaged over 295 yards off the tee so it appears from the small sample size that longer hitters may enjoy an advantage at Aronimink. With that in mind, here is a look at players who fared well at the event last year (the only year Aronimink has hosted a PGA event) and who are also playing well coming into this week and, therefore, should be factors come Sunday in Pennsylvania. Some of the golfers I like to fare well this week are as follows:
Nick Watney +1400– I never look at the odds before I make my top 5 picks (I don’t want the books to influence my thought process) and this is a rare occasion where my top pick is also the odds-on favorite to win this week. He finished 7th at Aronimink in 2010 and comes in off of a nice showing at the Travelers last week.
Webb Simpson +2800– This is also Simpson’s second week in a row in my top 5 and he had another good performance at the Travelers last week… his third straight top 15. There is a PGA Tour victory in the near future for Simpson. He’s just too good not to win eventually. Proof? He’s ranked #1 in the all around category statistically on the PGA Tour so far in 2011.
Carl Pettersson+5000– Finished 6th at Aronimink in 2010 and is playing really well coming into this week with 8 consecutive rounds in the 60s. Could he make it two straight for the Swedes after Jacobson’s win last week?
Sweden vs. Colombia
The FIFA Women’s World Cup continues with action from Group C, this match sees tournament debutants Colombia face off against Scandinavian giants Sweden at the BayArena in Leverkusen, Germany.
Colombia’s performances at women’s youth level has finally paid off, as the core group of this squad comes from the U17 side won the 2008 South American Women’s Championships, qualified for the 2008 U17 World Cup and took 4 th place in the 2010 U20 Women’s World Cup that also took place in Germany. This team qualified by beating the likes of Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela in the 2010 South American Women’s Championships, eventually ending up as runners up behind Brazil and knocking out Argentina in the process. The main reason for all this success comes down to Coach Ricardo Rozo, the Colombian Soccer Association picked the right man for the job having nurtured and fostered all the young raw talent the women’s game has to offer and piggybacked off the success of the men’s side. The key players for Las Cafeteras are Yoreli Rincon, Andrea Peralta, and Carmen Rodallega; Peralta is a defender with an ability to score goals while Carmen Rodallega will act as the “elder statesmen” of the squad at only age 27, this just outlines they youth that Colombia boast. However the star of this team is Rincon, even though she is only 17 years old she has plenty of tournament experience and is the main source of both goals and positive play.
As for Sweden, they are FIFA Women’s World Cup veterans having qualified for every tournament since its inception back in 1991; their best tournament finish was in 2003 when they finished as runners up to Germany. This team is always a danger and has one of the most consistent programs in the women’s side of the game, with the rise of the Swedish league many of these players are very familiar with each other and have developed a very effective style. Coach Thomas Dennerby will have the responsibility of finally getting this team over the hump and win the World Cup; he is very familiar with the Swedish philosophy playing for the countries at U21, U-19 and U-17 national teams and is looking to now add something to his coaching resume. The key player for Sweden is Lotta Schelin; she is a prolific goal scorer at club level but hasn’t made the same transition at national team level. Other players to keep an eye on are Therese Sjögran and Sara Larsson; these are the two most experienced players on the squad and will be relied upon for their leadership and organization.
This is a tough first match for Colombia, however this is probably the best time to take on an experienced side like Sweden. The Swedes should win this match convincingly, but all the pressure will be on them with this being the South Americans debut.
Pick
Sweden -200
