Kansas City Royals vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels meet for game two of their series in Kansas City following an exciting game one.  The Angels are -120 favorites over the Royals with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

The Kansas City Royals got out big in a hurry on Monday against the Angels but they were unable to hold on and lost their third in a row and eighth in their last 10 games. Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer both homered and had two hits and Wilson Betemit and Chris Getz both had two hits as Kansas City converted 11 hits into eight runs but they were unable to hold on when it mattered most.; Luke Hochevar allowed seven hits and four earned runs and he didn’t figure in the decision as his lead steadily eroded until Joakim Soria blew his fifth save and took his third loss of the season when he allowed four hits and three runs in the top of the ninth. Kansas City looks to regroup as they start Jeff Francis who finally got his first win of the season two games back. For the season Soria has allowed 82 hits and 34 earned runs while striking out 37 in 67.2 innings of work.

The Los Angeles Angels never gave up on Monday and it paid off with a win that they needed to keep pace with the Rangers in the AL West. Ervin Santana was roughed up as he allowed seven hits and six runs while striking out five over six innings of work but it was Kevin Jepsen who got the win after allowing just a hit in 1.1 innings of work and Fernando Rodney who got his third save. For Tuesday’s game Los Angeles starts Joel Pinero who hasn’t won since May 10. For the season Pinero has allowed 44 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 18 in 40 innings of work.

Kansas City is 2-8 in their last 10 home games, 3-14 in their last 17 games overall, and 2-8 in Francis’ last 10 starts. Los Angeles is 12-4 in their last 16 games against the American League Central, 0-5 in their lst five game two of a series, and 1-4 in Pinero’s last five road starts.

I consider the over a strong play here.  Take the over 8.5 runs in this ballgame.

Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox

The Boston Red Sox fell to a tie for the lead in the American League East as they fell to the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park on Monday Night.  The Red Sox are -165 favorites over the White Sox with an over/under run total set at 9 runs.

The Boston Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball of late but they fell to Chicago with one of their hottest pitchers on the mound. Adrian Gonzalez homered and had two hits, David Ortiz had two hits, and Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, And Kevin Youklis all had hits in a seven hit three run offensive effort. Jon Lester was unimpressive and didn’t have his best stuff as he allowed eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out four over 5.2 innings to take his second loss of the year. On Tuesday Boston starts Alfredo Aceves who has yet to take a loss this season as a starter or in relief. For the season Aceves has allowed 20 hits and seven earned runs while striking out 17 in 28.1 innings of work.

The Chicago White Sox haven’t recovered from their slow start this season and they may not recover at all this season but the AL Central’s biggest payroll showed they are a talented team capable of beating anyone. Paul Konerko homered and had two hits, while Alexei Ramirez and A.J. Pierzynski both had two hits in the 12 hit seven run assault on Boston starting pitching on Monday. Jake Peavy had yet another strong start allowing six hits and three runs striking out two over seven innings of work to get his second win of the season and the Sox fifth win in a row at Fenway. For Tuesday’s game Chicago starts Phillip Humber who has had three no decisions and a win in his last four starts. For the season Humber has allowed 43 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 33 in 60 innings of work.

Boston is 4-1 in their last five game two of a series, 16-6 in their last 22 overall, and 10-3 in their last 13 against the AL Central. Chicago is 4-1 in their last five game two of a series, 2-4 in their last six road games, and 3-8 in their last 11 against the AL East. Chicago is 8-1 in the last nine meetings of these two.

The White Sox just match up extremely well against the Red Sox, as there is no other explanation for their dominance so with the value being on Chicago, that’s where we are as well.  Take the White Sox plus the 145.

Pick

Chicago White Sox +145 Boston Red Sox

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers

Two contenders in the American League face off as the Tampa Bay Rays host the Texas Rangers.  The Rays are -125 favorites over the Rangers with an over/under run total set at 9 runs.

The Tampa Bay Rays start the week two games back in the American League East and in third place in the always-competitive division. The Rays are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 13-14 at home this season, and have outscored their opponents 29 runs. As a team Tampa Bay is hitting .245 led by Matt Joyce hitting at .365, Johnny Damon at .276, and Ben Zobrist at .253. As a team the Rays pitching staff has an ERA of 3.53 with the starters at 3.53 and the bullpen at 3.55. For game one against the Rangers Tampa Bay starts Wade Davis who is winless in his last three starts. For the season Davis has allowed 62 hits and 26 earned runs while striking out 30 over 63 innings of work.

The Texas Rangers are in first place in the American League West but there is just a game and a half separating first and last place in the division. The Rangers have won their last two in a row, are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and 9-14 on the road this season. As a team Texas is hitting .257 with Michael Young hitting .355, Josh Hamilton hitting .318, and Mitch Moreland hitting .296. As a staff the Rangers Pitchers have a team ERA of 3.62 with the starters at 3.37 and the bullpen at 4.25. For game one against the Rays Texas starts Derek Holland who has six straight no decisions. For the season Holland has allowed 69 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 48 in 59.2 innings of work.

Tampa Bay is 4-9 in their last 13 home games against a team with a winning record, 3-6 in their last nine games overall, and 2-5 in Davis’ last seven home starts against a team with a winning record. Texas is 5-11 in their last 16 road games, 2-7 in their last nine against the American League East, and 4-14 in Holland’s last 18 road starts. Texas is 6-13 in the last 19 meetings in Tampa Bay.

We have two pitchers who give up a lot runs and rely on support and two line-ups that support their pitchers. This could be a long afternoon but a good game for those who love offense.  Take the over 9 today in this game.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets

The New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates look to turn their seasons around as the meet at Citi Field in New York.  The Mets are -120 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under run total at 7 runs.

The New York Mets avoided the home sweep at the hands of the Phillies by winning on Sunday and hope to carry that momentum forward. The Mets are 11-14 at home this season, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and eight and a half games back in the National League East. As a team New York is hitting .248 led by Jose Reyes at .335, Carlos Beltran at .264, and Justin Turner at .330. As a team the Mets pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.21 with the starters checking in at 4.33 and the bullpen at 3.98. For game one against Pittsburgh New York starts Dillon Gee who hasn’t lost this season. For the year Gee has allowed 31 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 29 in 40 innings of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are still building for the future but the future is starting to look closer all the time. The Pirates are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 15-13 on the road, and six and a half games back in the National League Central. As a team Pittsburgh is hitting just .236 led by Neil Walker at .266, Andrew McCutchen at .257, and Jose Tabata at .252. As a staff the Pirates pitchers have a team ERA of 3.53 as the starters check in at 3.70 and the bullpen at an impressive 3.19. For game one against the Mets Pittsburgh starts Charlie Morton who seems to have found himself and is having far and away his best season. For the year Morton has allowed 53 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 33 in 62 innings of work.

New York is 2-6 in their last eight games overall, 2-8 in their last 10 home games against a team with a winning record, and 6-0 in Gee’s last six starts. Pittsburgh is 17-40 in their last 57 games against the National League East, and 7-19 in Morton’s last 26 starts. Pittsburgh is 5-17 in their last 22 games in New York.

While I think this is a one run game and I think it’s a toss up, I’ll give the Mets the nod with Gee and being home.  Take the Mets minus 120 in the ballgame.

Pick

New York Mets -120 Pittsburgh Pirates

SURFER’S PARADISE OBSERVATIONS OF A 2am CHANNEL SURFER

wade SURFERS PARADISEWithin 20 years, there will be a television show featuring an Australian man running around in the wilderness, enthusiastically stalking large animals with the sole purpose of checking out their private parts.

The show will be called Monster Cock Stalker Unchained, and will go a little something like this: Dressed in the mandatory safari shirt, hat and pants, a blond host will crawl up to a herd of large animals, then look back at the camera and say with an over-the-top Oz accent, “I’m gonna sneak up to one of the larger bulls and tryin’ get him aroused so we can take a looook!”

Then, he’ll run at the animals, wrestle one to the ground and tell it, “Easy mate, not gonna hurt ya, ol’ boy – just wanna take a looook-see at your wanker.”

America has a perpetual craving for Australian guys groping wild animals for entertainment. It started with Crocodile Dundee, who charmed us with his “shrimp on the barbie” talk. Then came Steve Irwin, whose abundant enthusiasm for harassing animals created the Crocodile Hunter cult. But we became bored with Steve wrestling everything on four legs to the ground, so he turned his attention to the water, but was killed by a stingray. America needed a new animal stalker, not only to reinvigoarated our lust for Aussie dudes bothering wild animals, but to give us a measured level of revenge against these menacing aquatic killers. Take that, you stingray bastards!

Enter Jeremy Wade, a cross between Rutger Hower and Udo Dirkschneider with a nervous eye twitch, who in each episode of River Monsters, takes us to exotic locations as he performs an audacious catch-and release of aquatic species. These mysterious creatures aren’t really monsters in the Loch Ness sense of word, as I soon found out. My redneck neighbors call them catfish.

Moments before settling in to watch Jeremy cast his monster bait into the murky waters of some third-world river, my attention had been waylaid by a startling relevation: There is now a shop-at-home TV channel selling women’s sex toys.

I stumbled across this gem on a non-porn channel, in the area of cable reserved for Hollywood gossip, cooking shows, and teenage vampire softcore. There were two young women in chairs, carrassing vibrators and telling the viewers that a devise called Purple Pleasure will make them feel magical. A clock in the lower left corner counted down what was either how long I had to buy it, or finish masterbating.

It wasn’t that long ago, that a woman stroking an object even remotely phallic, would not have been allowed on TV. Maybe it was the erection I was getting, or that unique delerium that you get at 2am, but I could swear I felt the entire country begin circling the drain. I decided to hit the remote and surf out of there.

That’s when I crashed onto the beach of Mr. Jeremy Wade – Fish Stalker. In this waste of half an hour of my life, Jeremy was in a boat, trying to uncover the mystery of a monster that “the locals” claimed eats children. Luckily for them, a goofy, short white dude with a fishing rod and a camera crew showed up to save the villiage. After all the build-up, and moments before the show was about to end, the great white hunter caught….. a catfish? Disappointed, I hit the return button on my control, hoping to find a great buy on butt-plugs.

America’s bored with this nonsense. Wildlife is best admired from a distance, where it retains a sense of mystery, dignity, and danger. The downside of these hands-on nature shows is that they’ve eliminated those aspects, turning our planet’s beasts into stupid, yet lovable spectacles. When you see an Australian clown playing around with a massive predator and it doesn’t eat him, the thrill is gone.

So, where are we to go from here? We’re bored with crocs and catfish. We’ve seen them all…… but we haven’t seen their Purple Passions!

We’re close now America – real close. The USA is picking up momentum as the culture circles the drain. In no time at all, full frontal nudity will be prevalent during primetime. They’ll be fornicating on Star Trek Deeper Space 9 before you can say, “Captain Kirk Junior’s beamin’ that Romulan chick ALL the way up”.

Of course, nature shows will follow suit – and you will watch. You know that you will, because it’s the shock of the new that keeps you tuned in, and for all of you who’ve never been to Bangkok, the sight of an Australian dude grasping a dingo’s member and saying, “Wowie Zowie mate! Look at the beautiful color variations around the gooch.” is something you will not want to miss.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies go for the road sweep on Sunday of their rivals, the New York Mets at Citi Field in New York.  The Phillies are -140 favorites over the Mets with an over/under run total of 7.5.

For the second night in a row the New York Mets were very much in position to win and beat the Phillies but for the second night in a row they were unable to close the deal and instead took the loss. Jose Reyes had two hits and scored twice and Justin Turner and Jason Bay each drove in runs as the Mets managed seven hits and two runs on the night. Mike Pelfrey continued his string comeback season as he allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out six over 7.2 innings as he didn’t figure in the decision as it was Mike O’Connor who was charged with the game deciding run without retiring a batter to take the blown save and the loss while Jason Isringhausen, Tim Byrdak, and Dale Thayer all saw action but none of them did anything to help the Mets stay within striking distance. For Sunday’s game New York starts Jon Niese who lost last time out after winning two in a row. For the season Niese has allowed 65 hits and 29 earned runs while striking out 44 over 60.1 innings of work.

The Philadelphia Phillies came from behind on Saturday as they kept it close and then took advantage of their opportunities. Chase Utley and Dominic Brown had two hits each, Ryan Howard drove in two runs, and Jimmy Rollins had a hit and scored in the Phillies eight hit five run offensive effort. Cole Hamels continued to look sharp this season as he allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 over seven innings to get his seventh win of the season while Ryan Madson pitched the ninth inning to capture his 11th save of the year. For Sunday’s series finale Philadelphia start Vance Worley who hasn’t lost a start his year. For the season Worley has allowed 15 hits and five earned runs while striking out 18 in 21 innings of work.

New York is 7-16 in their last 23 home games against a right handed starter, 1-6 in their last seven games overall, and 0-5 in Niese’s last five home starts against a team with a winning record. Philadelphia is 7-1 in their last eight games against a team with a losing record, 37-16 in their last 53 road games, and 39-19 in their last 58 game three of a series. Philadelphia is 6-1 in the last seven meetings of these two.

I’m not looking for much scoring here in what should be a fast moving game.  Take the under 7.5 runs here.

Pick

Under 7.5

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Chicago Cubs look to avoid the home sweep as they host the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field on Sunday.  The Cubs are -150 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under of 8 runs.

Just when it looked like the Chicago Cubs couldn’t play much worse, they were embarrassed at home for the second day in a row by the Pirates. The Cubs managed just three hits on Saturday, two of them that never left the infield as Alfonso Soriano Doubled to center and Darwin Barney and Luis Montanez both beat out infield hits as they failed to get a runner anywhere near scoring. Randy Wells’ return from the disabled list didn’t go well as he allowed five hits and five runs while striking out seven throwing 92 pitches and lasting just four innings. James Russell, Scott Maine, and John Grabow all saw action in relief and all allowed even more runs to score. Chicago looks to salvage a win in the series on Sunday as they start Ryan Dempster who has won his last two decisions. For the season Dempster has allowed 74 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 57 in 63 innings of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in fourth place in the National League Central and while this team is still below .500, they are clearly headed in the right direction. Roger Cedeno, Lyle Overbay, Chris Snyder and Andrew McCutchen all homered in a 10 hit 10 run offensive assaults on Cubs pitching. Pirates starter Paul Maholm was perfect through five innings but ended the day allowing just three hits and striking out four going the full nine innings and facing 30 batters for his second win of the year. For Sunday’s game Pittsburgh goes for the sweep as they send Jeff Karstens to the mound for the start. For the season Karstens has allowed 47 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 36 in 45.1 innings of work.

Chicago is 5-12 in their last 17 home games, 0-6 in their last six games against the National League Central, and 3-7 in Dempster’s last 10 home starts. Pittsburgh is 5-0 in their last five against the NL Central, 6-2 in their last eight against a right handed starter, and 2-11 in Karstens’ last 13 road starts. Chicago is 1-4 in Dempster’s last five home starts against the Pirates.

The Pirates have owned the Cubs for quite some time and Dempster has been a big part of that as well, a trend I see continuing in this spot.  I’m taking the Pirates plus the 130 today.

Pick

Pittsburgh Pirates +130 Chicago Cubs

Cincinnati Reds vs. Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds meet for the rubber match of their weekend series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.  The Braves are -145 favorites over the Reds and the over/under is 7 runs.

The Atlanta Braves evened their series with the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday even though it took them 12 innings to do it. Brian McCann had four hits including two home runs, Freddie Freeman had three hits including a home run, and Alex Gonzalez had two hits, which along with hits by Chipper Jones, Martin Prado and others were part of a 14, hit seven run offensive effort. Starter Derek Lowe allowed seven hits and five earned runs while walking five in 3.1 innings of work as the Braves used six pitchers in all and it was Scott Linebrink who got the win while pitching two innings allowing just a hit. For Sunday Night’s prime time game Atlanta starts Jair Jurrjens who has won six of seven decisions this year. For the season Jurrjens has allowed 50 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 33 in 57.2 innings of work.

The Cincinnati Reds slid to a game over .500 as they were unable to get the win on Saturday in extra innings. Johnny Gomes had four hits and scored twice, Drew Stubbs had three hits and drove in three runs, and Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto each had two hits as the Reds scored six runs off of 16 hits. Starter Bronson Arroyo allowed nine hits and five runs while lasting just three innings to not factor in the decision, as it was the Reds seventh pitcher, Carlos Fisher, who ended up with the loss. On Sunday Cincinnati looks to get things going in the right direction once again as they start Johnny Cueto who has a loss and a no decision in his last two starts. For the season Cueto has allowed 20 hits and six earned runs while striking out 15 in 24.2 innings of work.

Atlanta is 5-1 in their last six home games, 7-1 in their last eight game three of a series, and 10-1 in their last 11 against the NL Central. Cincinnati is 3-9 in their last 12 against the NL East, 2-7 in their last nine against a team with a winning record, and 3-7 in Cueto’s last 10 starts. Cincinnati is 9-5 in the last 14 meetings of these two.

I’m not expecting much offense against these two pitchers as if the bats are going to get to them at all, it is going to have to be early but I still don’t see this being a high scoring game.  Take the under 7 tonight.

Pick

Under 7

Manchester United vs. Barcelona

Finally the dust has settled and two teams are left to face off for the biggest prize in European Football, Manchester United and Barcelona will battle it out for the Champions League Trophy and the moniker of best in Europe. Think back to 2009 and Manchester United were overwhelming favorites to lift the Champions League trophy, the experts said Barcelona were poor at the back and wouldn’t be able to defend against a United attack of Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez. Well Barcelona held on to the ball got an early goal and never looked back, Manchester United did not really show up on the occasion and the players felt that they let themselves down. Well now two years later and the same payers get the chance to atone for that disappointing display and Sir Alex Ferguson gets the chance to right a tactical mistake he made two years ago.

Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona play a beautiful game, they hold the ball and they probe and they hold the ball and they probe and they get the ball to Messi who creates something from nothing and they score. It’s a simple tactic of waiting until the opponent makes a mistake and then punishing them. Barcelona on a number of occasions though this year when faced with a solid defense have actually struggled to break them down and only for Messi’s genius against Real Madrid then who knows, but the facts are the facts. Barca has Messi and he is a genius. With Xavi,Iniesta and David Villa Barcelona are astonishingly good in the middle and up front, again like two years ago the question marks hang over the defense. Gerard Pique was with Manchester United and was allowed to go back to Barcelona, as Sir Alex deemed him not good enough to be a starter. Puyol and Abidal along with Dani Alves are attacking minded defenders and age is against Puyol at this stage. I think they may struggle to contain the runs of Chicarito Hernandez and Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson rarely makes mistakes such as the one he made two years ago, he changed a system that worked to accommodate Ronaldo and it backfired. United though on the day just didn’t get going and Barcelona held the ball and had them chasing shadows for most of the match. With Vidic and Ferdinand at the center back position and Evra and O’Shea in the corners United will be solid on Saturday, Edwin Van Der Saar after a 20+ year career is calling it a day and the Dutchman will play his last competitive game of soccer between the sticks on Saturday. Lifting the Champions League trophy would be a great way to exit the game. With Ryan Giggs, Park Ji Sung, Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick United will look to work hard to pressurize Barcelona on the ball and to force their opponents into making mistakes and then upfront for United is the key. Wayne Rooney and Hernandez have found a great telepathy and they are really linking well Dimitar Berbatov will probably start on the bench but the enigmatic Bulgarian is a match winner on his day.

On paper this game could be a classic, we have two teams who pride themselves on playing football. We have two of the greatest attacking players in world football one on either team (Messi and Rooney) and we have a Barca defense that is prone to the odd clangor. This one will be tight and could go all the way to penalties, in looking at this game I’ve considered loads of different permutations but the one thing that keeps coming back to me is that revenge is a dish best served cold, United were beaten and beaten badly by Barcelona two years ago that came a year after United knocked Barca out in the semi-final. I think Sir Alex Ferguson gets it right on Saturday and with the stronger bench players and the more talented defense I think Manchester United get it done and the trophy stays in England.

Pick

Manchester United

Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Minnesota Twins look to bounce back from yet another horrible loss as they host the Los Angeles Angels in game two of their series.  The Angels are -150 favorites over the Twins with the over/under total set at 7 runs.

The Minnesota Twins appeared to have the win well in hand on Friday Night but they melted down and let it get away taking a tough loss. Alexi Casilla had three hits and scored twice, Jason Kubel had two hits and drove in three runs, and Justin Morneau and Danny Valencia each had a pair of hits as the Twins scored five runs off of 12 hits on Friday. Scott Baker allowed six hits and struck out six over seven scoreless innings but the bullpen let it get away as Alex Burnett and Dusty Hughes let in two runs each without retiring a batter and Jim Hoey was charged with the blown save and the loss allowing four hits and two runs in an inning of work. On Saturday the Twins will try and bounce back as they send Francisco Liriano to the mound for the start. Liriano has a no hitter this season and for the season he has allowed 39 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 34 in 48.2 innings of work.

The Los Angeles Angeles trailed 5-0 as the game entered the eighth inning on Friday but they never gave up and rallied for the win. Erick Aybar had two hits including a three run homer, Bobby Abreu had two hits and scoed a run, and Torii Hunter had three hits and scored the game winner as Albert o Callespo drove him in on one of his three hits. Tyler Chatwood allowed eight hits and four runs over 5.2 innings of work and Hisanori Takahashi allowed two hits and a run while striking out two in an inning of work but it was Scott Downs who got the win after pitching two-thirds of an inning and Jordan Walden got his 11th save of the year after pitching the ninth inning. For Saturday’s game Los Angeles goes with Jered Weaver who has lost his last four decisions. For the season Weaver has allowed 59 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 70 over 76.2 innings of work.

Minnesota is 3-8 in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record, 6-15 in their last 21 game two of a series, and 0-4 in their last four Saturday games. Los Angeles is 2-5 in their last seven road games, 10-3 in their last 13 against the AL Central, and 1-4 in Weaver’s last five starts. Los Angeles is 6-2 in their last eight meetings in Minnesota.

While both of these pitchers have been inconsistent, the better bet to come around is Weaver who hasn’t been the same since getting sick earlier this year.  I’ll take the Angels minus the 150.

Pick

Los Angeles Angels -150 Minnesota Twins
